Testing, testing...1, 2, 3

So, it was an interesting fashion test last Thursday. Thanks to Courtney (pictured first) for the styling, to Morgan for the hair and make-up, to Erica for assisting, and to Polina for modeling. Much to our surprise, during the course of shooting, we saw pet chickens, mysterious ambulance drivers napping in the grass, dead fish, and deer... pretty good for not even leaving the city limits! All in all, it was a fun shoot.

Lesson of the day - Things ALWAYS take longer than expected

So, this is something that comes up time and time again at the studio... TIME FLIES! I was once told that you should always give yourself a few extra days for deadlines. SO TRUE. Like my dad always says "you need to meet or exceed your clients expectations". If something comes up (like it ALWAYS does) and you get it to them later than you thought, at least you gave yourself a few extra days. Same goes for EVERYTHING..... hair and make-up (that usually takes much longer than I schedule for and I should know better), meetings, phone calls and websites!!! ....etc. I sat down at the computer today with a few goals to finish. Next thing I knew, the day was gone. It is now 10:45 PM.

Thanks to Erica for modeling. Sometimes being an intern means more than just computer work. And thanks to Sandy for helping out. I could not have held the flash by myself!!

Landscape is better than food today

I have been talking a lot about wanting to shoot food... and I have been working hard at it, but the past few weeks I have been shooting a lot of landscape for a local landscape company. Today was a great day to be out in Chicago shooting landscapes!!! I love the summers here.

Lesson of the day - CLEAN YOUR SENSOR!

OK.  Here it is again.. another lesson of the day.  My new intern, Erica, started last week and her first day was spent learning this lesson.  CLEAN YOUR SENSOR before every job.  Unfortunately I had to relearn this lesson as well.  I currently (usually always) use the Arctic Butterfly to clean my sensor in my digital camera.  Yes, it does look like a sex toy, but it is a useful tool IF you use it.  You could save yourself hours of dumb mindless work if you just clean your sensor.  DO IT!  Spend the 3 minutes and save yourself or your new intern hours of frustration.  Thanks Erica... I hope to get you off the computer soon!!!

4th of July

Lesson/tip of the day: If you plan on spending your next 4th of July on the northwest side of Chicago, bring ear protection and wear a gas mask!  We had a ton of fun just sitting in our backyard after being away last year.  At about 10 PM the smoke rolled in and the car alarms would not stop but what a show.

Lesson of the day - FOLLOW UP!!!

I am starting a new section, or regular addition, or what ever you want to call it, to my blog. "Lindsay's Lesson of the Day" begins today.  Just to be clear, I will not post a new lesson everyday, but will post as often as they come up.

So here is the story... Colin, my old intern came into the studio today to show me some new work and to talk about getting into the business as an assistant (he will be an excellent assistant).  I was going through some old postcards that I have be sent in the past and pulled out a few that I really liked.  One postcard I even had on my 'to call' board.  For one reason or another I never  called that assistant.  I never heard anything else.  I filed that postcard and now years later I wonder what ever happened to that assistant.  ... please follow up.  If you send a postcard or call or send an email and I do not respond, that is just because I am busy or have a favorite assistant at that time.  But things change and people move on and it is always good just to send a hello as a reminder that you still exist.

I will tomorrow take my own advice and follow up with a few people.

FOOD

OK.  The more I think about it and the more I shoot, I am really liking food these days.  I know I have said that I want to be a 'foodie' but now I am really considering shooting food for real.  There is just something real about shooting what everyone needs to survive.  Sure, no one needs a late night fried egg sandwich with bacon, but it sure is fun!   Here is a fast promo that went out to a select few.  The new website will have a new 'food' section.  I am so looking forward to this!!!!

More Odin

At the beginning of this blog I promised I would not use this to upload and show off snapshots of my son, but I had to post this.  We were in florida a few weeks ago for my grandma's memorial service and I caught this running monkey with my G9.

More uploads of real work coming soon!  I have been so busy shooting tests and promos I almost have not had time to show off the real work.

Fashion

Just realizing I never posted any 'finals' from the test last fall- it seems to me that I am always working on all my images and they are never actually FINAL.  Here is a shot.  Doesn't go along with my new food obsession, but I still like it.  Maybe next test will be fashion models covered in bacon?!

Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!  I hope everyone is doing their part.  I am doing my part by not dumping fixer, stop bath or developer down the drain today... or this year.... or never again!  Now go ride your bike, take a run or do what ever it is you do to the nice weather!

I want to be a Foodie

As a photo assistant years and years ago I hated assisting food shots - sorry to my food photographer employers. Then my first big shoot with Time Out Chicago was a cover shot with food. What??!! I was hired because I shot my crazy grandma's pile of buttered toast and had it on my website... I took the photo because I thought my grandma was nuts with her 10 pieces of toast for the 4 of us eating breakfast, not because I enjoyed shooting food or even thought of food as more than just fuel. I did the cover shot anyway and managed to get a pretty model into the shot but did not really want the food in the shot.

Now years after a cooking class in Italy, more restaurants than I can count, numerous food shots and a new kitchen, I think I finally figured out want I want to be when I grow up... a foodie. With my new found love of food, I think I have a new found love of food photography..... of course in my own weird way.

New favorite restaurant: Hot Chocolate on Damen Ave.
Photos have nothing to do with above restaurant.

Art?

A friend of mine just sent me this.  I watched it first without the sound and then again with the song.   It hits on something that I have been dealing with all my life..... enjoy.

FLORIDA

I love Florida.  Here is a something from a location scout a few weeks ago.  Of course we were there the coldest week they had ever and it was warm in Chicago (well, 50's which is warm compared to -15!).  Looking forward to going back again soon to finish up the project.
